Fire Experience Working for Rural Fire
J & J Custom Fire, Inc.
Jerry Potter, President of J & J Custom Fire, Inc., spent 30 years as a firefighter for the Red Rock Rural Fire Department and 10 of those years as fire chief. In 1980, Jerry and other crew members built their first fire truck for RRFD, a 1953 GMC 1 ½-ton truck. This truck was modified from a 600-gallon steel tank and gear pump to a 400-gallon fiberglass tank. A high pressure roller pump was installed, along with a walkway enabling crew members to work both sides of the truck when fighting grass fires.
Thanks to a fire grant, the department then received a new 2003 1-ton Chevrolet cab and chassis, which is still in service. The crew decided to build the new truck with a walkway, high pressure pump, and 250 gallon tank. This truck endured testing for 3 years on the fire line and performed flawless. With the use of the high pressure pump and the ability to maneuver the firefighter from side to side when on the fire line, this truck used less water and was able to stay on the line longer.
J & J Custom Fire began in 2006 with an idea to build a brush truck that was both strong and easy to work, with a high pressure pump, poly tank, ground sprays, and a walkway behind the cab. J & J began building the first trucks for county departments who had seen the 2003 Chevrolet truck work the fire line.
J & J Custom Fire still builds 1-ton trucks, but specializes in retrofitting numerous military vehicles into brush and tanker trucks with more water capacity and the ability to start the pump, and operate the ground sprays and spray monitor from the cab.
J & J installs tanks, pumps, dump valves, side sprays, LED lighting, work lights, emergency equipment, tool boxes, and custom-built equipment including, but not limited to, bumpers and grill guards. J & J strives to fulfill the needs of individual fire departments as requested; therefore, if you can think it, J & J will help make it happen.
Many J & J employees are firefighters who bring a combined experience of 90+ years to the fire service and are proud to support America's bravest.
